Exteroception: is your nervous system's process of detecting and interpreting sensory information that originates outside your body. In psychology, it plays a critical role in shaping behavior, emotion, mental health, and cognitive processing.
To help improve or balance exteroception, you can engage in practices that train your brain to shift attention outward, calm overstimulation and ground your nervous system. Examples:
Exteroception meditation: focusing on a neutral/positive object in your environment and letting thoughts/feelings pass, but returning to that same object
Orienting: when anxious/overwhelmed scan environment for neutral/safe objects/cues
Interact with environment using 5 senses: feeling textures, smelling scents, noticing details, listening to sounds, tasting flavors
