The ABC’s of Psychology

statue thinking

Behavior: the way in which someone conducts oneself.

  • According to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) thoughts, feelings and behaviors are strongly interconnected.

  • For example:

    • Thought: “I don’t know anyone here and I’m so awkward.”

    • Feeling: anxiety/fear

    • Behavior: not engaging in conversations with others and wanting to leave event early

  • Which reinforces the belief that “I am awkward.” On and on the cycle goes, unless interrupted by a new belief/thought, feeling and/or experience.

  • EMDR is another way of disrupting this cycle, however it goes about it in a different way - a bottom-up approach (body based) versus a top-down approach (cognitive/intellectual).

  • Regardless of the mode of therapy, it's important to explore what is behind the behavior. It is in that awareness that change can start to happen.
