Virtual Counseling
Benefits to Virtual Counseling
I have many clients or potiential clients feeling uncertain about virtual counseling. I understand that it might feel less personable or connected or difficult to do, but there are so many benefits to online therapy that get overlooked. Here are a few that come to mind:
User-friendly: typically it is very easy to connect for online therapy; it usually looks like a link sent to your email that directs you to a confidential, virtual session.
Accessible: allows individuals in remote areas or with mobility limitations to access therapy with more ease.
Convenient: it only takes 50 minutes out of your day rather than an hour and a half or more to include driving, parking and waiting; sessions could also be conventiently scheduled during a child’s nap or during a lunch break at work.
Private: confidential and discrete as long as you have a space without others in listening distance; having sessions in the comfort of your home or office can also create a sense of privacy.
Cost-effective: could reduce costs associated with transportation, parking or extra time away from work.
Specialized therapy: no need to settle for who is close by, have more access to counselors that specialize in your needs by having access to therapists licensed throughout your state, rather than being limited to your local area.
How to Prepare for Online Therapy
A few ways to prepare for a great virtual session include:
strong wifi connection
confidential space
having tissues, water and possibly a snack nearby
